Best Natural Toothpaste for bad breath

Halitosis, also commonly known as “bad breath,” is a concern many people have at some point in their lives and visit the dental office with this concern. We are all familiar with the unpleasant ‘morning breath’ which is normal and goes away after a good round of tooth brushing and mouth rinse. But sometimes bad breath lingers on and doesn’t go away, this is when it becomes a problem. Most physicians and dental practitioners are inadequately informed about the causes and treatments of halitosis. The problem of halitosis is quite common and has been recorded to have a prevalence ranging from 50% in the USA to between 6% and 23% in china. A recent study had revealed a prevalence of self-reported halitosis among Indian dental students ranging from 21.7% in males to 35.3% in females. Miyazaki concluded that there was increased correlation between older age and malodor with aging resulting in greater intensity of odor.  In the age group of 60 years and above in Turkish individuals, the incidence was around 28%.

Causes of Halitosis

Oral causes:

  • Food impaction
  • Periodontal pockets
  • Pericoronitis
  • Dry socket
  • Xerostomia
  • Oral ulceration
  • Oral malignancy
  • Gingivitis
  • Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis
  • Poor oral hygiene

Non oral causes:

  • Sinusitis
  • Tonsillitis
  • Respiratory disease
  • Gastro esophageal reflux disease
  • Renal disease
  • Leukemia
  • Hepatic failure

Treatment of Halitosis

Practicing good oral hygiene is paramount to controlling bad breath and lowering your risk of gum disease and developing cavities. Further treatment for bad breath can vary, depending on the cause. If your bad breath is thought to be caused by an underlying health condition, your dentist will likely refer you to a specialist and investigate further.

If the causes are oral health related you will be recommended the following treatment options:

  • Mouth rinses:An anti-bacterial mouth wash such as chlorhexidane is very effective in eliminating bacteria in the mouth caused by buildup of plaque. SprinJene Mouthwash contains many antimicrobial ingredients such as zinc, black seed oil, tea tree oil, pomegranate, sea bucks seeds and others. All these ingredients can help in reducing the cause of halitosis.
  • Treatment of dental disease. If the cause is due to gum disease, you may be referred to a gum specialist (periodontist). Gum disease can cause gums to pull away from your teeth, leaving deep pockets that fill with odor-causing bacteria. These pockets and tartar cannot be cleaned using a tooth brush at home hence only professional cleaning and root planing can remove the tartar from teeth and root surfaces thoroughly. Sometimes plaque builds up around dental restorations that need cleaning as well.
  • Brush your teeth after you eat.Aside from brushing twice a day, it is also advised to carry a tooth brush to your work place to make sure you brush after meals. Brushing with SprinJene natural toothpaste contains black seed oil, zinc (zinc has been approved by FDA as antimicrobial and antigingivitis) and other natural ingredients with antimicrobial components has been reposted by many consumers to reduce bad breath.
  • Floss at least once a day.Proper flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth, helping to control bad breath.
  • Brush your tongue. The back of your tongue harbors bacteria, so carefully brushing it may reduce odors. People who have a coated tongue from a significant overgrowth of bacteria (from smoking or dry mouth, for example) may benefit from using a tongue scraper. Or use a toothbrush that has a built-in tongue cleaner.
  • Clean dentures or dental appliances. If you have a fixed bridge restoration or you wear a denture, clean it thoroughly at least once a day or as directed by your dentist. If you have a dental retainer or mouth guard, clean it each time before you put it in your mouth.
  • Avoid dry mouth. To keep your mouth moist, avoid tobacco and drink plenty of water. Coffee, alcohol and soda can lead to a drier mouth. Sugar free gum with xylitol is a natural sweetener which produces saliva which helps cure dry mouth. For chronic dry mouth, your dentist or physician may prescribe an artificial saliva preparation or an oral medication that stimulates the flow of saliva.
  • Adjust your diet.Avoid foods such as onions and garlic that can cause bad breath. Eating a lot of sugary foods is also linked with bad breath and should be avoided as it causes bacterial activity in the mouth which produces lactic acid which adds to bad breath.
  • Regularly get a new toothbrush.Change your toothbrush when it becomes frayed, about every three to four months. Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head so it reaches all surfaces of the teeth.
  • Schedule regular dental checkups. It is advised to see a dentist once every six months.
